If you find your backlit Game Boy extra whiny, it's time to do something about it. How to fix it. The Game Boy can be upgraded with a specific capacitor to let more power through, reducing whine.

You will need to enlarge the viewing window in the DMG front shell, and provide your own LCD protector (JellyBelly customs sell these). Some shell modification will be required. Soldering required for your existing speaker and 2 backlight wires.

While not a drop in replacement, this new screen does offer a superior backlight, amazing contrast and comparable refresh rate with the original. Due to the STN construction of the LCD there are some contrast artifacts on heavy grey images but these don't normally occur during gameplay. This can be seen in the image with the BennVenn SD logo - and is the absolute worst case example.

Place the new film behind the Game Boy screen. The polarizing film will appear darker or lighter when rotated 90°. We will need to choose the right orientation for our backlight mod. If the Game Boy will be using a bivert chip, the polarizing screen needs to be tilted 90° until it appears dark. I've said it before, and I'll say it a gain. I love my toys. I especially love it when I rediscover a toy from my past and use it in ways that were never intended by it's manufacturer. There is a refreshing nostalgia that one experiences when making something obsolete do something new and exciting. As such is the case with the Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 (the old brick).
I recently started getting into some music that some may find difficult to comprehend. Some call it 'Nintendo Core,' while others pledge allegiance to the 'Nerdcore' genre. However, I find '8-bit' or 'Chiptune' to be much more descriptive.
Using software written for the Game Boy called LSDJ, 'Chiptuners' compose 8-bit songs in the unit and play live shows in libraries, art galleries, alleys, and house parties across the globe. Making little to no money, it is very clear that these artists are just in it for the fun. One statement that could be inferred about Chiptuners is this; they are very serious about their 'toys.'
Any Game Boy is capable of utilizing LSDJ to compose groovy tracks, but who want's just ANY Game Boy? It was really only a matter of time before someone decided to tear one apart to see exactly what the DMG-01 was capable of. And we're all glad that someone did.
You can now own a Game Boy that can clock anywhere from 2x speed to half speed. (High score on Tetris anyone?) You can boost and clean up the audio signal and send it out through RCA jacks instead of the standard headphone jack. You can install transparent buttons and fill your brick to the gills with LEDs. But perhaps the most popular, and I think the most useful modification, is the LED back light.
Using a kit that can be purchased through either Nonelectronics or Projectgameboy, you can back light your Game Boy for about $15 bucks. This is a great modification for anyone hoping to perform a live show or party as it will greatly improve visibility in dark settings and is a lot less cumbersome than an attached Game Boy light.
As someone with basically no experience with electronics, I found the tutorial offered on Nonelectronics website to be straightforward, and this modification was fairly easy (though time consuming) to complete. The result as pictured above, is a super bright back lit Game Boy DMG-01 that will turn heads.
I'm still very new to Chiptuning and hope to learn much more about the genre. One thing is certain, I will never look at a Game Boy the same way again.
